   Supreme Court

   Supreme Court extends 10 km mining buffer to wetland conservation reserves nationwide³

   On 4 August 2026 a Supreme Court bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, hearing a Himachal Pradesh application, orally clarified that its Asan wetland order (14 February 2024) barring mining within 10 km without NBWL Standing Committee or MoEFCC permission applies to wetland conservation reserves generally; the written order was not seen.

   • Oral clarification during hearing of Himachal Pradesh's application (reported 5 August 2026)
   • Original interim order of 14 February 2024: no mining within 10 km of Asan Wetland Conservation Reserve without NBWL Standing Committee or MoEFCC permission
   • Justice Bagchi: directions apply wherever there is a community or wetland conservation reserve
   • Whether the Asan reserve extends into Himachal is a question of fact for the Standing Committee or MoEFCC
