Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, born in Tiruchirappalli in 1888, discovered in 1928 at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Calcutta, working with K. S. Krishnan, that a small part of light passing through a transparent material scatters with a changed wavelength. This Raman Effect won him the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, the first for an Asian in that field.
